3D Printing – Plastic Filament

Plastic Filaments Rolls

ABS Gears VS PLA Gears

There are two common diameters of plastic filament for 3D printing, There is 1.75mm plastic and then there is also 3mm plastic, most 3D printers will use only one of these two types; this is because at present the extruders on 3D printers are designed to work with a single diameter of plastic filament and will not work with any other.

ABS Filament

ABS plastic (Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene)is a common thermoplastic used in many applications, it is a strong, flexible and durable type of plastic and is available in a large range of colours. ABS has been found to be very useful in 3D printing.

Chemically, the ABS family of thermoplastics are called terpolymers since they are made of three different monomers: acrylonitrile, butadiene and styrene. The combination of the three monomers creates a single material that draws on the best properties of all three. ABS was introduced to the market in 1948.

ABS is a hard, tough and heat-resistant engineering plastic widely used in appliance housings, luggage, pipe fittings, and automotive interior parts and has a varied range of applications. The material may be injection-molded, blow-molded, or extruded.
